THREE students of Cross River State University on Tuesday reportedly lost their lives in an auto crash while travelling home following the institution’s two-week closure.
The university had shut down to prevent students’ participation in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest scheduled for 1st August to 10th August 2024.
The accident occurred near Ikom along the Calabar–Ikom Highway as the students were en route to Ogoja in the northern part of the state. An eyewitness, Ndoma Akunobor, who was also on the bus, reported that the deceased students were from the departments of Microbiology, Plant Science, and Biotechnology of the institution. Their names had not been confirmed at the time of this report.
The university management had ordered the closure from 30 July to 12 August in anticipation of the nationwide protest. This decision, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the students, unfortunately led to this heartbreaking loss.
