PANIC gripped passengers on the Lagos waterways on Thursday morning when a LagFerry boat, Igbega Eko, suddenly exploded and burst into flames while en route to Victoria Island. Several passengers sustained minor injuries as they scrambled for safety.
The incident, which occurred around 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, caused chaos among commuters relying on the water transport system.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that confirming the fire, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) stated that its officers were on the ground to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.
“There was a bang, and suddenly, fire engulfed the boat. The exact cause remains unknown, but investigations are ongoing,” a NIWA official told Tribune Online.
Similarly, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) acknowledged the incident and assured the public that a full investigation was underway to determine the cause.
In an official statement, LASWA revealed that four passengers sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical attention. The agency emphasized that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team quickly mobilised to the scene, coordinating with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation,” the statement read.
“We are currently conducting a preliminary investigation in collaboration with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment. Safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to implementing necessary fire prevention measures across the Lagos waterways.”
LASWA also reassured the public that ferry operations remain intact, urging passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while commuting.
