THE Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 94-year-old man for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.
The suspect, said to be a herbalist, allegedly committed the crime in the Tappare Ward, Ganye Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, 12 August and was arrested on 18 August.
Adamawa State Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Sulaiman Nguroje, said in a statement that the suspect was in the habit of luring young females into his abode by offering them paltry items before raping them.
Same method he applied in the latest incident; he, as usual, lured the victim, who was passing by his house, and had an unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
Police preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, in the course of having intercourse with the victims, would rub a liquid substance on them, resulting in such victims becoming ill afterwards.
The last straw that broke the camel’s back was the incident of the 13-year-old, who had to narrate what transpired between her and the suspect, occasioning a complaint by the victim’s mother at the Ganye Divisional Police Headquarters and the subsequent arrest of the suspect.
According to the statement, the state Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola, expressed disgust at the incident and directed the officer in charge of the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Command to take over the investigation and ensure diligent prosecution of the culprit.
“The police boss equally calls on members of the public, particularly parents, to be watchful of their wards against criminally-minded elements and key into the Command’s effort in fighting to end all forms of gender-based violence,” the statement said.
