RIVERS State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has charged Rivers United to win and bring the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) trophy to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Governor Fubara gave the charge in a video call with the Pride of Rivers squad ahead of their last NPFL Championship play-off match against Enyimba International tonight.
Speaking via video conference from the Government House, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State governor spoke with former Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Christopher Green, General Manager Chief Okey Kpalukw, Club Secretary Ahmed Abdulrahman, Technical Manager Stanley Eguma, the players, technical crew and support staff.
Commending the team for already securing the ticket to represent Nigeria in CAF interclub competition, Governor Sim Fubara urged Rivers United to show the world they are the best by eventually lifting the trophy while reassuring the team of a state welcome should they retain the NPFL title.
“I want to appreciate what the team has done. You remember what happened the last time when you did well for us. Fortunately, I was there when the trophy was handed over to you. Go and prove to the world that you remain the best.
“On our part, when you come back with the trophy, you will be honoured again in a special way.”
Responding on behalf of the team, Captain Festus Austin thanked the governor for finding time to speak with the team as this will motivate them to victory, promising that Rivers people will smile at the end.
“We want to assure you that we are going to get it right and bring the trophy back to Port Harcourt. Your Excellency, we will always put smiles on your face and the entire people of Rivers State.
