THE recently retired Provost of Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, Dr Ayodele Ajayi and his driver were reportedly late evening yesterday abducted by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Dr Ajayi was said to be travelling with wife from Olodo to Abeokuta when the vehicle he was travelling in was blocked by the abductors. The abductors were said to have abandoned the ex-Provost’s wife and his car at the scene of the incident.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Omolola Odutola, assured that there was no need to panic. She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun, has dispatched special operatives and detectives from the Ogun State Police Command to track down the gunmen, who have not yet been identified.
She further stressed that all security agencies were collaborating in the search effort and that the police, along with Amotekun, Vigilante groups, and hunters, have been deployed to the forests with strict instructions to apprehend the abductors and ensure the safety of the victims.
The PPRO also confirmed that immediately after the incident, the gunmen left the victim’s car and escaped with the car owner and his driver abandoning the man’s wife due to the “intense police pursuit”.
“The wife has been transported to the hospital for medical attention. Additionally, the police received information from other sources indicating that the abducted individual was identified as Dr Adetayo Ajayi from Osiele Abeokuta”.
According to the Police PPRO, although the available details are sketchy at the moment, she, however, stated that once the police have gathered more information from their pursuit of the kidnappers, updates would be provided to the members of the public.
