MIXED reactions have trailed a poster showing the immediate past Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali-Baba, showing interest in the Yobe East Senatorial District due to be vacated by the current office holder, Ibrahim Gaidam
The now-viral poster, which emanated on Saturday, 12 August 2023, showed Alkali-Baba with the slogan Gobe Ta Allah Ce, loosely translated as ‘tomorrow belongs to God.’
It is understood that the former police boss may be seeking to contest the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the expected resignation of Senator Ibrahim Gaidam to become a minister.
Recall that Gaidam, who is the serving senator representing Yobe East Senatorial District, was among the second batch of ministerial nominees forwarded to the red chamber by President Bola Tinubu last week.
Alkali-Baba was sacked by Tinubu in June after approving the immediate retirement of all Service Chiefs, and Advisers.
The poster of the former IGP vying for a senatorial position has stirred mixed reactions amongst Nigerians on social media.
While many questioned the possibility of the former police chief being a card-carrying member of the APC even while in office considering the ease with which he jumped into political foray barely three months after he retired from the Forxe. Others opined that since he is no more in active service and being a Nigerian, no crime is committed in seeking a political position.
@Timiglow said; “If Nigerians don’t come against all forms of criminal gangs of APC and destroyed its entity, APC will bury that country finally with countless corruptions and consequential failures.”
@aai_austin wrote; “Just retired not up to 3 months and he’s running under APC already?”
chriswolex wrote: “That is the main problem of this country, cos all institutions that need to be independent are politically afflicted.”
@salishfman said; “So is it a crime for an ex-officer (rtd) to join politics? This isn’t news at all.”
