NIGERIA Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their proposed industrial action which is scheduled to commence on Tuesday as the labour leaders reportedly met with the federal government to allow it (the government) to implement the labour unions’ demands.
The meeting which started on Sunday, was concluded on Tuesday and the two labour unions agreed to shelve the indefinite strike.
Confirming the development, the deputy president, NLC, Adewale Adeyanju, directed all members of the Maritime sector to resume work on Tuesday, 3rd September, 2023.
Adeyanju, who so also the deputy president general of the Marítime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), in a statement by the head of Media, MWUN, John Ikemefuna, said the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC directed that all its affiliate members should direct their members to return to work on 3 October 2023 as the planned indefinite strike has been suspended.
Also speaking on the development, Ekiti State NLC Chairman, Comrade Kolapo Olatunde said the decision was made during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday.
He said, “NEC in session has suspended the strike.
“NLC and TUC leadership to finalise the meeting called by the federal government now and cross the t and dot the i.
“The NEC in section gave kudos to the NLC president for his doggedness and be on the lookout for the communique and the signed agreement soon”, he said in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti,
