JOE Igbokwe, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized social activist Aisha Yesufu for what he described as disrespectful conduct towards the new national anthem.
Yesufu, known for her activism, refused to stand up or sing the national anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” at an event.
A video of the co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls advocacy group shared on X showed her sitting and while others at the event stood up for the recitation of the anthem, has made the rounds on social media. Her disposition indicated that she is displeased with the recent reintroduction of the old national anthem. She also captioned the video “#NotMyNationalAnthem.”
Reacting, on his Facebook page on Saturday Igbokwe criticized Yesufu’s behavior as “nonsensical” and warned that her actions may harm her and her family.
He wrote, “Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behaviour will take her to. She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on Wednesday, restoring ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ as the national anthem.
