THE head coach of Amavubi of Rwanda, Torsten Spittler, has expressed mixed feelings following the draw for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which placed Rwanda in the same group as Nigeria and Benin.
Spittler said he was “a little bit sad that we have two teams in the group, Nigeria and Benin, with whom are also playing in the same group in the World Cup qualifiers, but it is what it is.”
Group D, in which Rwanda is, also has Libya in it, as the fourth team.
Rwanda and Benin are in the same group as Nigeria for the 2026 World Cup qualification. Nigeria currently occupies the 5th position with only three points after four matches. Both Benin and Rwanda, alongside South Africa, have seven points each.
The battle for AFCON qualification is set to begin this September.
Spittler’s Amavubi will be vying for a spot in the finals, scheduled to take place in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
Two teams will emerge from each of the twelve groups.
