THE Audu Bako, Kano, Kano State office of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was today looted and thereafter set ablaze by riotous protesters who were ostensibly ventilating their grievances regarding the harsh economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The protesters looted many office equipment, including chairs, monitors, and others, before setting the building on fire.
This was confirmed by an aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a video posted on X, Abdullah Misilli. He said; “Protesters go on rampage in Kano. Here is the gatehouse of the NCC set ablaze.”
Meanwhile, men of the Nigeria Police have dispersed a large crowd of irate protesters who attempted to gain entry into the Kano State Government House.
The protesters, carrying placards with messages such as “End Bad Governance,” “Bring Back Our Fuel Subsidy,” and “Open the Border,” clashed with armed forces stationed at the seat of government.
The situation turned chaotic when some protesters began throwing stones at the security personnel, who, in response, shot tear gas and fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd.
Although no casualties were reported, many individuals were injured in the resulting stampede, while some police officers were also injured from the attack.
Authorities have since blocked all roads leading to the Government House and increased security in the area to prevent further incidents.
Also, hundreds of protesters wearing face caps with the word “peace” inscribed on them have stormed the streets of Kano, chasing away protesters who were looting shops and other commercial places.
The ‘peace’ protesters, in their green face caps, chanted “Mu yanci mukeso ba ruwan mu da kayan kowa,” meaning, “We need freedom from the government, we don’t want anybody’s property.”
One of the ‘peace’ protesters told journalists they would do their best to stop the looting and destruction of innocent people’s properties.
