THE House of Representatives has insisted that the salary for lawmakers is N600,000, contrary to the speculated N900,000.
Rotimi Akin, spokesperson for the Red Chamber, clarified that there are no discrepancies in lawmakers’ monthly salaries.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Akin addressed media reports suggesting discrepancies in lawmakers’ salaries and claims that members received N936,979 for July.
He confirmed that the actual monthly salary is N600,000 after deductions for advances such as housing, which are given at the start of their tenure.
Akin explained that the discrepancy reported was due to an exceptional case where a member, who assumed office through a court decision long after the usual onboarding process, displayed his salary on a television programme.
He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to the resolution passed on 18 July 2024, which mandated a 50 per cent salary reduction for six months to alleviate financial hardship. Akin acknowledged that this reduction was not implemented in July due to delays in administrative procedures and coordination with financial institutions, as the formal instruction was only given on 23 July 2024.
The spokesperson assured that steps have been taken to adjust the salaries accordingly moving forward and emphasized that there was no need for further investigation as the House had already addressed these issues with journalists.
Akin called for patience and reiterated the House’s dedication to adhering to its pledge and maintaining the trust and confidence of Nigerians.
