THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has uncovered a fraudulent mobilization scheme involving a bread seller who didn’t attend school.
According to the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the bread seller was mobilised by the University of Calabar, Cross Rivers State, but was caught thanks to the vigilance of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi.
“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came to us and reported that she observed some names on the institution’s list that ought not to have been there,” General Ahmed explained.
“She checked the list the school gave us, and I told her that their certificates would be invalidated.”
The NYSC DG praised Professor Obi for her vigilance, saying she had earlier hinted the Scheme about the mobilisation of unqualified graduates from her institution.
“Previously, a bread seller was mobilised on the graduation list from the same institution. There are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates,” Ahmed said.
The incident highlights the presence of fraudulent activities in some institutions, compromising the integrity of the NYSC scheme. The NYSC has vowed to leave no stone unturned in sanitising its mobilisation process.
“We can’t allow unqualified individuals to compromise the integrity of the NYSC scheme,” said General Ahmed.
“We’ll work tirelessly to ensure that only deserving graduates are mobilized for national service.”
