KOGI State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in last year’s election, Senator Dino Melaye, has said his party is ‘irredeemably destroyed’ and now faces imminent extinction.
The former senator from Kogi West Senatorial District, via a post on X (formerly Twitter), also hinted at the commercialisation and privatisation of the opposition party.
The erstwhile lawmaker accused the acting national chairman of the party, Iliya Damagum, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and Umar Bature of destroying the main opposition party.
According to Melaye: “End of the road for PDP as Damagum, Bature and Anyanwu irredeemably destroyed the party. We will talk about the commercialisation and privatisation of PDP. PDP is now once upon a time.”
The PDP has been besieged by a number of intra-party issues, particularly since it lost the 2015 presidential election. Recently, there were indications that the party National Working Committee (NWC) might sanction Damagum and Samuel Anyanwu over a letter they addressed to the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt division.
But, on Thursday, Damagum warned that nobody could intimidate him into resigning from his position.
Damagum said those calling for his resignation are only enhancing his popularity.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees, the acting chairman berated those spreading misinformation about NWC operations.
“Let me send a message to everyone talking about Damagum this, Damagum that—I cannot be intimidated. The more you mention me, the more popular I become,” Damagum said.
