WEEKS after arresting leaders from Okuama, a community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, armed soldiers allegedly launched an attack on the town early Monday morning.
According to reports, the soldiers, supported by gunboats, stormed the area, shooting indiscriminately.
A resident of the community, speaking from a hiding place in the bush, described the situation to Vanguard correspondent.
He revealed that the military personnel entered Okuama through the Okoloba community after drones were used to survey the area on Sunday.
A video obtained by a Vanguard correspondent shows a community youth expressing frustration over the attack and pleading with the government for assistance.
“As I speak, soldiers and some youths have stormed our community, shooting at anything in sight. They parked their boats at Okoloba and came on foot. The small tents we have built are being razed,” the source said.
The resident expressed fear and confusion, stating, “Everyone is in disarray; I can’t find my child; why are we being treated in this manner? Why will soldiers team up with our enemies to attack us? Our leaders were arrested weeks ago, and now they have come to sack the community.”
At the time of the report, the reason for the latest military invasion remains unclear, leaving residents in a state of panic and uncertainty. Further information is expected as the situation develops.
Authorities have yet to respond to these allegations or explain the reasons behind the military presence in the community.
