THE Chairman of Mushin Local Government in Lagos, Emmanuel Bamgboye, has directed the committee in charge of elections at the popular Aguiyi Ironsi Spare Parts Market in the Ladipo area of Mushin to allow traders with both the old and new Identity cards to operate in the market.
He also ordered that the new amendments made to the association constitution by the incumbent chairman of the market association be immediately reversed.
Bamgboye gave the directives with a view to resolving the leadership crisis rocking the popular spare parts market.
The directives followed a meeting with the Executive Chairman, the management of Mushin Local Government, and key stakeholders with the executive council of the market, where all the aggrieved parties in the market tabled their grievances against the leadership.
The meeting was held on 24 September 2024 in the office of the council boss, where Bamgboye directed the leaders and members of various groups in the market in preparation for the coming election of the market executives to embrace peace.
After listening to their submissions and other deliberations at the meeting, Bamigboye directed that the constitution should be amended to allow the tenure of the executive to last for at least three years to replace the two-year term limit currently being used in running the affairs of the association.
He also said that Lagos indigenes should be included in the executive membership of the market association and that the local government has to go through the constitution for clarity and make it understandable to everyone in the market.
A new electoral committee should be established for the market association to comprise nine members, which he breaks down to four from the current chairman of the market association and three from the other faction, while the local government will also provide two.
The electoral committee should allow traders with both old and new Identity Cards to operate in the market, and new amendments made by the incumbent chairman in the constitution of the market association should be reversed.
The electoral committee should do its work with all transparency and there should be accountability for neutrality and objectivity. One of the representatives of the local government in the electoral committee should head the electoral committee.
The chairman also directed that the names of all the contestants and the members nominated by the different groups and parties to serve in the electoral committee should be submitted to the appropriate authority. The electoral process should include shop-to-shop enumeration for the election.
After the chairman’s directives, all the parties at the meeting, including the stakeholders, agreed to abide by and follow the directives to have a peaceful election and transition of powers to new executives.
The meeting also had in attendance council officials and all stakeholders from Aguiyi Ironsi Spare Parts Market.
