CHAIRMAN of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadu, has showered praises on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his decision to scrap the ‘ineffective and wasteful’ Ministry of Sports and replace it with the National Sports Commission (NSC).
President Tinubu on Wednesday scrapped the Ministry of Sports Development, and all its roles transferred to the National Sports Commission.
In a statement issued by the Media Team of the House Committee on Sports, Hon Amadu, who represents Gusau-Tsafe Federal Constituency of Zamfara State in the Lower Chamber of the National Assembly, said the decision of Mr. President is a welcome development and one that is totally supported by the National Assembly.
“Mr President should be highly commended for this bold decision to return the sports sector to a Commission.
“This has always been the position of the House Committee on Sports that a Sports Commission is what the country needs for effective growth of the sector.
“Mr President just spoke the minds of many sports stakeholders, and we believe this is the beginning of a new chapter that will enhance the development of our Sports.
“The advantages of having a Sports Commission cannot be overemphasized because it will pave the way for the right professionals to manage the Sports Sector,” the statement reads.
Despite the announcement, the spokesperson to the President, Bayo Onanuga, did not state what would happen to the ministers in charge of the scrapped ministries or how they would function henceforth.
The Niger Delta Ministry is being headed by Abubakar Momoh, from Edo State, with Senator John Enoh from Cross River, is presided over the sports development ministry.
On Tuesday, the House Committee tongue lashed the Sports Ministry and the minister for receiving so much money from the government but failed woefully to deliver any positive or add value to the Sporting sector of the economy.
