TEN months after she was kidnapped in Kaduna, a female resident medical doctor at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, Ganiyat Popoola, has regained freedom.
Dr Popoola, a Registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology, was abducted along with her husband, Nurudeen Popoola, a military officer, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugni, in December 2023.
The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N40 million, which was eventually paid. Following this, her husband was released on 8 March 2024, but Dr Popoola and her nephew remained in captivity.
However, on Wednesday evening, both Dr. Popoola and her nephew were freed, ending their terrifying experience.
Dr Tope Osundara, President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), expressed great joy and relief over their release, thanking all those who contributed to their safe return. This incident underscores the increasing concern about ongoing kidnappings and ransom demands in the country.
