THE National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages below 200ml, targeting major distributors at Rumuokoro Market in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
During the raid, hundreds of cartons of sachet and PET bottle alcohol were discovered in two shops. Traders, however, resisted attempts to evacuate the products, forcing NAFDAC to place them on HOLD.
The ban announced in February 2024, followed a five-year grace period granted to manufacturers in 2018 to phase out production. This federal directive, developed in consultation with stakeholders, aims to safeguard public health, particularly among young Nigerians.
“NAFDAC will continue to mop up banned products in markets, supermarkets, and street vendors. Manufacturers still producing these beverages risk severe penalties as the Agency remains committed to protecting public safety.”
