FORMER Black Stars of Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has spoken out about his perceived rivalry with former teammate Andre Ayew, dismissing any animosity between them.
However, the Ghana all-time top scorer suggested that Ayew has been influenced by others with ulterior motives.
Gyan and Ayew have shared a storied history with the Black Stars, often regarded as two of Ghana’s most influential players over the past decade.
Both were instrumental in Ghana’s campaigns at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and various Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
While Gyan captained the team from 2012 to 2019, Ayew succeeded him in a dramatic fashion, fueling speculation of rivalry between the two.
Despite occasional rumours of tension, both players have publicly expressed respect for each other.
However, Gyan’s latest remarks suggest external influences may have strained their relationship.
“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people,” Gyan stated during an Instagram Live session.
“That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone.”
Asamoah Gyan retired from football in 2023 while Andre Ayew is still actively playing but has been sidelined from the Black Stars by head coach Otto Addo.
