Ebube Duru’s late goal from the spot condemned Kano Pillars to a 1-0 defeat at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium as Rivers United set a new Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title-winning record of 74 points.
The NPFL champions dominated most of the game but had to wait long for their win with the Sai Masu Gida side giving away a penalty in the closing stages.
On an emotional evening at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium as the Pride of Rivers stepped onto the pitch in grand style, playing in front of their home fans for the first time after being crowned NPFL champions with 3 games to spare.
Pillars looked to have held out for a draw with goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo making as many as six saves, but Ebube two minutes into added time steered in from the spot the only goal of the match as the visitors were penalised when the ball struck a defender on his upper arm.
The victory, a 22nd in 36 NPFL games, means Rivers United FC have broken and created a new record of points set by a league champion.
Previous record holder: Dolphins Football Club of Port Harcourt, 2010/2011: 73pts
Rivers United of Port Harcourt now have 74 points with 2 matches left.
