FORMER President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo has offered an explanation for removing his Christian name ‘Matthew’ from his name.

According to the two-term president, he took the decision when he discovered in the Bible that Mathew was a tax collector.

The former president who was present at the ongoing Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church 100-year conference revealed that he deleted the name ‘Mathew’ from his name since he detected that Mathew was a tax collector in the Bible.

Obasanjo stated that since he didn’t want to be a tax collector, he decided to remove the name and refuse to answer anybody who called him ‘Mathew’.

Obasanjo narrated the case of a man who knew him when he was a boy and saw him when he visited the Mushin area when he was President.

He stated that the man started calling ‘Mathew’, ‘Mathew’,’ Mathew’ and ran to meet him. He said he told his security guard to allow the man to see him. He then explained to the man that whenever he wanted to call him, he shouldn’t be calling him ‘Mathew’ if he wanted him to answer.

Obasanjo stated that he prefers being called “Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo”  than any other name.
