A harrowing road mishap transpired today at College Bus Stop along Ikotun-Igando Road, involving a Volkswagen-painted commercial bus (KSF 364 XC) and an Acura SUV (MUS 99 GN).
Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, says preliminary investigations indicate that the Acura Soort Utility Vehicle (SUV) driver, succumbing to the perils of excessive speeding, momentarily lost concentration, veered off course, mounted the median, and catastrophically collided with an oncoming Volkswagen commercial bus laden with passengers.
The sheer force of the impact inflicted grievous injuries on several commuters, including multiple fractures and other severe trauma.
Exhibiting unparalleled promptness, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) executed a swift rescue operation, successfully evacuating 13 injured passengers — comprising eight males and five females.
To maintain order and facilitate emergency response efforts, security personnel from the Igando Police Division provided crucial reinforcement throughout the operation.
With the aid of conscientious passersby, LASTMA officials ensured the expeditious conveyance of all casualties to a nearby private medical facility at Igando for urgent treatment.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, underscored the paramount importance of adherence to prescribed speed limits by both private and commercial motorists to avert such calamitous occurrences.
He further highlighted the Lagos State government’s ongoing deployment of speed limit enforcement cameras across key locations to rigorously monitor and deter reckless driving.
Extending his heartfelt sympathies, Mr Bakare-Oki conveyed his profound well-wishes for the swift recovery of all injured passengers. He reaffirmed LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to fostering safer roadways and mitigating traffic-related casualties across the state.
