THE United States joined Russia in voting against a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine, marking a significant departure from previous United States policy.
This shift occurred on the third anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and put the United States at odds with its European allies.
The resolution was adopted with 93 votes in favour, expressing concern over the ongoing invasion and calling for a peaceful resolution. In contrast, the United States introduced a rival resolution that did not label Russia as the aggressor or acknowledge Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated, “A simple, historic statement from the General Assembly that looks forward, not backwards… Ending the war. A path to peace is possible.” She emphasized the US opposition to supporting Ukraine’s resolution, urging for a resolution focused on peace.
Ultimately, the US abstained from voting on its own resolution after amendments strengthened the language against Russia and reinforced Ukraine’s territorial claims.
