TWO persons including a petroleum product tanker driver and the apprentice who accompanied the driver have been confirmed dead in a fire incident that occurred early today at the Orita Challenge outlet of GABSTAB Petrol Station in Ibadan.
The duo, whose names have not been revealed, lost their lives when the tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol exploded.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, beside Total Filling Station, Orita Challenge, in Ibadan.
It was gathered that the fire incident was a result of brake failure when the driver was trying to negotiate the roundabout. The tanker hit the concrete, somersaulted and caught fire.
In a statement released by the General Manager, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Yemi Akinyinka, a petrol tanker driver and his motor boy lost their lives in the incident.
“The fire incident was reported at exactly 05:01 on Tuesday 4th March, 2025. Immediately, the address was taken, and the fire personnel, led by ACFS Olubunmi Christy was promptly deployed to the scene of the incident.
“On arrival, it was a fallen petrol tanker in front of a petrol station. We swiftly swung into action. The foam chemical compound was applied and the fire was put under control within a short period. The driver and motor boy of the truck were burnt, recovered and handed over to the FRSC and conveyed to the hospital. The Sumal Food Limited firemen were also in attendance to assist. The agency’s personnel are still at the scene doing cooling to completely extinguish the fire.
