A Malawian court has ordered that Shepherd and Mary Bushiri be brought back to South Africa to face several charges against them.
South Africa has welcomed this verdict that was delivered by Malawi’s Chief Resident Magistrate Court.
The court in Malawi has granted an extradition of Bushiri and his wife back to South Africa to face several charges committed in the country before they fled to Malawi.
Shepherd and Mary Bushiri appeared before two different courts in South Africa on multiple criminal charges in 2020. They were granted bail pending trial but failed to comply with their bail conditions, fled the country and later relocated to Malawi.
Following this, South Africa submitted an extradition request to Malawi, seeking their return to stand trial on various charges, including, rape, violating bail conditions, contravention of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, Banking Act, Civil Aviation Act and Immigration Act.
The pair were facing fraud and money laundering in South Africa.
In a statement, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development says they have been informed that the pair intends to appeal the ruling.
