THE Labour Party (LP) has said that Barrister Julius Abure is still its National Chairman of the party despite a Supreme Court judgment earlier on Friday that addressed the party’s leadership issue.
A five-man panel of the apex court, in a unanimous judgment, held that the Court of Appeal lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the suit being an internal party matter. The justices explained that leadership matters within a political party are internal issues, and courts should not interfere.
The court upheld an appeal by Senator Nenadi Usman and another party member.
However, shortly after the judgment, the Labour Party responded in a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Iloh, said the court did not remove Abure as chairman.
The statement read: “The Supreme Court strikes out Nenadi and Abure suits, saying only political parties can determine who their leaders are. It also said that the courts shouldn’t dabble in the affairs of the political parties. Dr. Julius Abure is still the National Chairman of the Labour Party.”
