OPERATIVES of the Rivers State Police Command on Monday fired tear gas canisters at protesters who had staged a peaceful protest against what they called bad governance in the country.
The protesters, under the aegis of the ‘Take It Back Movement’ were also protesting against the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State as well as the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act by the Nigerian Police.
The protesters had converged at the Isaac Boro Park when the officers stormed the area.
Members of the organisation were greeted by heavy police presence when they gathered at the protest venue as early as 9:00 am.
“Nobody can tell us where not to gather, we are Rivers people,” young demonstrators were heard shouting at policemen.
The Nigeria Police Force had advised the organisers to shelve their plans.
