A convicted murderer awaiting the hangman’s noose but took advantage of the Benin jailbreak during the October 2020 #EndSars protest to escape has been arrested for yet another crime.
Festus Okoeguare was arrested alongside Nancinant Paul Joshua by a combined team of Ogun State policemen attached to the Ogbere Division and Amotekun Corps on 16 July 2022.
Festus and other members of electricity cable vandals had, on that fateful day, gone on an operation where they vandalised the power installation at Hallmark University Junction on the Shagamu-Benin Expressway.
Disclosing this development in a statement, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated that, while they were on the operation, information was received by the police and, in a swift response, the Ogbere Divisional Police Officer (DPO) mobilised his detectives, in collaboration with men of Amotekun, and raced to the scene.
“On sighting the security men, some of the hoodlums took to their heels while others escaped in the syndicate’s get-away operational vehicle”, the PPRO said, adding, “Fully determined to apprehend those on foot race, the security men chased after them and succeeded in the arrest of the duo”.
He stated further that, in the course of interrogating the suspects, investigations revealed that Festus Okoeguare was one of the escapees of the “EndSARS” attack on the White House Correctional Centre located on Sapele Road in Benin City, Delta State, and that
he was convicted of murder in 2010 and was sentenced to death by hanging.
According to Oyeyemi, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Departments for proper profiling and onward transfer of Festus to the White House Correctional Center.
