The Sango-Otta Area Commander, Ogun State, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohammed Musa, has reiterated the need for all police operatives to ensure maximum civility in the discharge of their duty to the public.
ACP Mohammed dropped this advice on Monday, 15 August 2022, while decorating seven recently promoted Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs).
The decorated officers with their new ranks of Superintendent of Police (SP) are Balogun Funmilola Julianah (F), DTO, Ifo Division; Sodeinde Odebimpe (F), DTO, Sango-Otta; Okunola Mutiat (F), DCO, Ojodu-Abiodun and Ejalonibu Mutiu (M), DCO, Ojodu-Abiodun.
Others are Ishola Funmilola (F), DCO, Ajuwon; Okoh Victoria (F), O/C, JWC, Ajuwon and Babafemi Oluyomi (M), Patrol and Guard (P&G), Ojodu-Abiodun.
ACP Mohammed, who was assisted by the duo of his second-in-command and DPO, Sango-Otta, Woman CSP Ibiyemi and SP Saleh Dahiru respectively said, “This job we are doing is for the masses, and we have to be just in doing it, to gain their confidence”.
Drawing an inference from the #EndSARS furore, the police boss noted that so many police formations were spared of attacks, while some others suffered colossally, all based on the conduct of officers serving in the formations. “So, what I am saying, in essence, is that it is good to be good”, he said.
According to him, “As a policeman, you have to live by example. You should not be seen participating in or encouraging criminal activities. With that, we would be losing public confidence, which is not good for our image.
“Based on the comments of the public, we assess our performance as to whether we are doing well or otherwise. Be good leaders and representatives of the police anywhere you find yourselves”, the Area Commander charged the newly promoted officers.
He said, “With this promotion, your hard work is appreciated and rewarded, and to whom much is given, much more is expected. You have more responsibilities and tasks”.
He, however, frowned at the level of indiscipline in the Police Force, stating that, “if there is total discipline, whereby every policeman knows what to do at the appropriate time, you don’t need to do much in the act of supervision.
“Nowadays, the crop of policemen we see, especially out on duty, we have a lot to do; ordinary proper dressing is becoming something else. This act of extortion is another problem. We are all living witnesses to what happened between last week and today. So, you have to be more serious and effective in discharging your responsibility”
He noted that the current Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has been so committed to the welfare of the police and urged the promotees to be abreast of the additional responsibility bestowed on them by virtue of their elevation
