39-year-old embattled internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas (popularly known as Hushpuppi) will be sentenced on Wednesday, 21 September, the United States Attorney’s office for Central District of California, Los Angeles has said.
The court’s Director of Media Relations, Thom Mrozek, disclosed this on Friday, 26 August in response to an email inquiry by Channels Television.
Hushpuppi’s sentence date had been moved three times since his conviction in 2021. Valentine’s 14 February date was first chosen for his sentencing before it was postponed to 11 July and now 21 September.
Mrozek disclosed that the suspect had long pleaded guilty to the alleged $1.1m fraud last year and would be sentenced later this year.
“Mr Abbas is currently scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge in Los Angeles on 21 September,” he said.
Hushpuppi had entered a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to charges including money laundering, and wire fraud, amongst others brought against him by the US government.
According to court documents, he risks “20 years imprisonment; 3 years of supervised release; a fine of $500,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offence”.
He was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 alongside 12 others and extradited to the US for prosecution.
