Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Tuesday lost their second successive friendly game against the USA Women’s national team in preparation for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Nigeria, who had on Saturday lost the first clash by four nil, improved on their last Saturday performance but despite their improvement, they went down 2-1 to the World Champions.
The game, which was played inside the Audi Field, Washington DC, saw the Americans maintain their winning streak against the Falcons as they have now won all eight fixtures between both teams.
The last time the Falcons scored against the US was in the group stage of the women’s football event at the Sydney 2000 Olympics which ended 3-1 in favour of the United States.
Having started on an impressive note in the defence, Super Falcons eventually conceded after twenty-four minutes as a youngster, Blessing Dimehin painfully put the ball into her own net while trying to clear a United States square play out of the danger zone.
The Falcons fought back and were rewarded as Spain-based Uchenna Kanu equalized in the fiftieth minute with a fine finish from a Glory Ogbonna pass.
The momentum however didn’t last for long as the Americans went 2-1 up through Rosemary Lavelle who headed in a cross from the left off the boot of Megan Rapinoe in the sixty-sixth minute.
The Randy Waldrum-led side have now lost their last four games and will play another friendly against former world champions Japan in Kobe on 6th October 2022.
