A fatal motor accident involving a diesel-laden tanker and a commercial tricycle (aka Keke Marwa), has claimed five lives on the Iju-Otta Bridge in Ogun State.
The casualties of the Wednesday, 7th September 2022 accident were mainly occupants of the tricycle.
Both the accident truck and the tricycle were heading towards Iju-Otta from the Iyana-Iyesi axis on the Sango-Idiroko Road, with the tricycle ahead of the truck.
While descending the slope, it was gathered that the truck, in an apparent brake failure, ran into the tricycle and plunged it into the river.
All occupants of the ill-fated tricycle were trapped in the said river, as the truck fell atop it.
Operatives of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), in conjunction with other security agencies, raced to the scene to rescue the victims.
Their rescue efforts, however, ended up in futility as the entire victims were brought out dead and have been deposited at the State Hospital, Otta morgue.
This resulted in a heavy traffic gridlock that was eventually eased off after the TRACE management hired a crane and a flatbed to evacuate the accident truck and tricycle.
