AFCON: Sack José Peseiro Now, Ex-Super Eagles Goalkeeper Tells NFF

FORMER Super Eagles goalkeeper, Idah Peterside, has called on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to immediately dismiss José Peseiro in the aftermath of Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday night.

While William Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria an early lead with a header in the 38th minute, Ivory Coast made a strong comeback in the second half, securing two goals.

Expressing his disappointment with the Super Eagles’ performance, Peterside criticized the lack of a defined playing style, suggesting that Peseiro adopted a defensive approach reminiscent of Jose Mourinho’s tactics.

“We all know Brazilians play Samba football, the British will always play fast football and just drop the ball, that is how they play,” Peterside stated in an interview with Channels Television.

Peterside highlighted the success of Ivory Coast, mentioning that they changed their coach to a home-based one who understood the team’s culture, resulting in positive outcomes. He emphasized the importance of playing possession-based football and urged the NFF to consider a change in leadership, stating, “We don’t have that kind of culture. You know a lot of people asked me yesterday, the coach got the final, what do you think, I said to fire him.”
