AKWA United moved out of the red zone on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table and extended their unbeaten run in the league to five matches following an emphatic 2-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on matchday 31 decided on Thursday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The Promise Keepers took the lead in the 44th minute of the first half when Felix Oloye accidentally headed Etiene Asuquo’s long throw-in into his own net, substitute striker Abson Mare wrapped up the game in the second half with a precise finish to secure all three points for the 2021 league champions.
The win propelled the Promise Keepers to 16th position on the log with 37 points from 31 matches, stretching their unbeaten run to four victories and one draw in their last five league games scoring eight times while conceding just one goal.
The 2-0 victory improved Akwa United’s head-to-head record against Niger Tornadoes to nine wins in 14 meetings.
Coach Boboye’s Reaction
Head coach of Akwa United Kennedy Boboye in a post-match conference congratulated his players for adapting to his style of play and playing according to his instructions. He also revealed that his team still has a lot of work to do in the remaining seven matches to ensure they secure their NPFL status for the next football season.
“I really want to congratulate my players, they played with great determination and commitment. You can see that the confidence level is very high and we want to maintain that in all the remaining matches.
“We are not yet done with the season, this result has taken us out of the drop zone and we still have seven matches to play before the end of the season. Our target is to ensure we go for maximum points in each of the remaining matches, we have to fight for every available point at home and at away games because that is the only way we can achieve our target “.
Akwa United will next be in action on Wednesday 2nd April when they will engage Mighty Jets Feeders in the President Federation Cup Round 32 match in Kogi State before travelling to Lafia next weekend to face Nasarawa United in Lafia on matchday 32.
