A tense scene erupted at Lagos airport on Saturday when a Nigerian woman ripped up her husband’s international passport shortly after they arrived from overseas.
The incident, which has been widely criticized as the destruction of government property, has sparked public outrage and demands for legal repercussions.
In a video that circulated online, the woman, clearly enraged, responded dismissively when questioned about her actions, saying, “Is it your passport?” She then left her stunned husband behind, holding their children’s hands and telling him, “If you want to sleep there, sleep there. This is Nigeria; this is where you will be.”
Bystanders, including officials at the scene, attempted to console the husband, advising him to remain calm and avoid reacting to his wife’s outburst.
The woman’s behaviour has been condemned as not only an emotionally charged public spectacle but also a serious legal offence, considering that passports are the property of the Nigerian government.
Reactions on social media have been varied. One user, @STDpicks, remarked, “Hope she knows it’s a crime to destroy government property, and she could face jail time.”
Another user, @__jaidz, criticized her actions: “I don’t know why some women act without considering the consequences. She’ll probably regret this later. Women need to think logically and not act solely on emotions.”
The incident has also sparked a broader conversation about marital dynamics and respect, with some users questioning the relationship’s foundation and others urging caution before making judgements without hearing both sides of the story.
