FORMER Dutch coach Louis van Gaal recently made explosive remarks, saying that Messi’s victory at the World Cup in Qatar was “pre-designed”.
At the Eredivisie awards ceremony in Utrecht, the 72-year-old Dutchman appeared in public after a long absence, saying he deliberately avoided public appearances after the World Cup.
Speaking about the last dance of his coaching career, Van Gaal said: “I don’t really want to say too much, the score is 2-2, there is extra time, there is a penalty. When you look at how Argentina scored, how we scored, and how some of Argentina’s players fouled and didn’t get punished – I think it was all designed in advance. ”
Asked what exactly he meant by these words, Van Gaal replied: “Just like I said. Does Messi have to be the world champion? I think yes, yes. ”
Van Gaal showed some impatience on the topic: “I think I’ve said enough, why do I say so much and you keep asking me?” ”
Talking about his health problems, Van Gaal said: “It was still the previous illness, I had another operation on 9 August and I had complications, but now I am in good shape. I have to rest until 19th September and see how well I recover, Most of the time I feel fine, but I feel uncomfortable and out of breath when I climb the stairs, not like this two years ago, now it will. ”
Van Gaal also revealed to people what the players say about him that is most satisfying to him: “Sometimes I have to make decisions for the good of the team and the players, and there may be people who are not happy at the time, but 10 years later, they suddenly tell the media: Van Gaal is right. I think that’s the best compliment I can get as a coach. ”
Van Gaal also reflected on his own constant media tension: “I could have done it differently, In general, I was an emotional person, I would always shout, and if I had been calmer, it would have been better. ”
