THE Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ogun State, Niyi Ijalaye reportedly slumped and died after a meeting at the Maitama headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
Mr Ijalaye was said to have returned to his hotel room on Monday after the meeting at the INEC office when he suddenly slumped.
The meeting at the INEC office was presided over by the Commission Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu and was centred on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, as well as discussions on seven vacant positions in the national and state Assemblies.

Niyi Ijalaye, an Indigene of Owo in Ondo State, was said to have participated actively during the meeting and was in good spirits before the death later in the evening.
Mr Ijalaye was appointed as the Ogun State REC on the 23rd of February 2022 following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State.
Mr. Ijalaye was born in 1958. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.Bf) from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1982 and was called to the Nigeria Bar (B.L) in 1983. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Law (LL.M) from the same University in 1995.
