WORLD record holder in 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, failed to show up for the first semi-final heat on Day 1 of the African Seniors Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon on Friday.

The Ogin State-born athlete reportedly suffered ‘Sore throat’ which prevented her from achieving her bid of becoming the third Nigerian high hurdler to win the 100m hurdles three times at the African Athletics Championships.

The world record holder was entered to compete on Friday in the first semi-final heat of the event at the ongoing 23rd African Athletics Championships in Douala but the world record holder in the event did not show up.

It was gathered that Amusan was unwell and had to skip the event she hoping to win for the third consecutive time after winning in 2018 and 2022.

Only the duo of Maria Usifo and Glory Alozie hold the record of three consecutive wins in the history of the Championships.

Team Nigeria in Douala that has taken an early lead on the medal table wishes her quick recovery.

Nigeria has 2 gold secured in the men’s Shot Put and women’s Discus event along with a silver and bronze medal in the women’s Discus.

Eight finals will be decided today at the championship.
