THE Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, 22 May 2023, secured the conviction and sentencing of David Asigbe Iremekhi before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri to one-year imprisonment.
The defendant was jailed on a one-count charge of cheating following an investigation arising from a petition written by Jerry Shugaba alleging Iremekhi reneged to pay him accrued profits after he convinced him to finance a purchase order awarded to Sky Global Concept Limited by Terre Des Hommes.
The defendant pleaded not guilty when he was first arraigned on 8 March 2023.
At the resumed hearing of the case, Iremekhi pleaded with the court to change his plea and then pleaded guilty to the charge.
Counsel for the prosecution M. Faruk prayed the court to convict the defendant as charged.
Justice Fadawu, thereafter, convicted and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment with an option of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000.00) fine.
The judge further ordered the convict to pay Shugaba the balance of Eight Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N8,950,000.00) or go to jail for five years.
