JUSTICE Muhammad Maina of a Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri on Wednesday, 12 March 2025 convicted and sentenced Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe to one year imprisonment.
Omorogbe was arraigned by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of N1, 190,000.00.
The amended charge reads: ”That you Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe on or about May 2021 in Maiduguri, Borno State dishonestly misappropriated and converted to your own use the aggregate sum of One Million, One Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira (N1,190,000.00) belonging to one Sarah Bulama under the guise of securing an employment for her sister and one other person with National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition (a.k.a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons) and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Law of Borno State (Cap. 102 Vol. 3 of 1994) respectively.”
The defendant pleaded “guilty” to the charge preferred against him by EFCC.
Counsel to the prosecution, S.O Saka, prayed the court to convict the defendant accordingly, while counsel to the defendant A. A . Yaro, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
Justice Maina thereafter convicted and sentenced Omorogbe to one-year imprisonment with an option of a fine of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000.00).
Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe’s journey to the correctional centre started when he fraudulently collected N1.1 million to secure employment for his victims with the National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition (a.k.a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons) and failed to secure the jobs for them. He also did not return their money to them.
