A mild drama unfolded at the Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held earlier today as two claimants to the National Secretary position of the party, Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye clashed.
The main opposition party, already grappling with multiple crises, convened the high-stakes meeting at its National Headquarters in Abuja.
The session was officially declared open at exactly 12:05 p.m. by the BoT Chairman and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara.
Anyanwu was present at the commencement of the meeting, while Ude-Okoye made a tense entry five minutes later at 12:10 p.m., setting the stage for an intense atmosphere.
Shortly after, the meeting moved into a closed-door session as tensions simmered over the ongoing leadership struggle.
Recall that in 2023, the PDP’s South East zone nominated former National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu as National Secretary after he was chosen as the party’s candidate for the Imo State governorship election.
The South East PDP contended that Anyanwu should no longer hold the position following his selection as the Imo candidate, sparking further controversy.
On 20 December 2024, the Appeal Court in Enugu upheld Ude-Okoye as the PDP National Secretary, and the decision was formally communicated to the party leadership on 24 December 2024.
However, last week, the Court of Appeal in Abuja issued a restraining order, directing Anyanwu to remain National Secretary until the Supreme Court resolves the appeal.
