ENYIMBA FC have won the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title as the Peoples Elephant claimed their ninth league title after holding Rivers United to a 1-1 draw in their final game of the Super Six play-off at the Mobalaji Johnson Stadium on Sunday.
The Finidi George-led side won the league on superior goal difference after tying on nine points with Rivers United and Remo Stars.
Enyimba drew three and won just two of their five games in the championship play-off, and it was good enough to emerge champions.
In the final game, Enyimba hit the back of the net in the 39th minute as Ekene Awazie dispatched a well-taken goal.
Rivers United responded immediately after the halftime break, with Nyima Nwagua stabbing the ball into the net after a goalline scuffle.
The Peoples Elephant held on for a famous draw that extended their achievement as the most successful club in the Nigerian league.
The club will represent Nigeria at the CAF Champions League next season alongside Remo Stars, who finished second.
The Ikenne Boys defeated Bendel Insurance 1-0 in an earlier fixture.
Qudus Akanni’s 36th-minute strike proved vital in securing their place in the continent’s premier club competition next season.
Rivers United finished third and will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Meanwhile, either Bendel Insurance or Rangers will join Rivers United at CAFCC after the FA Cup final.
