FORMER Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba is dead.
He reportedly passed on at the age of 65 at the National Hospital, Abuja. A source said that the Kano State-born politician has been bedridden for some time.
He was once flown abroad for medical treatment and stayed there for some months before he recovered and returned to Nigeria.
Na’Abba, the second Speaker of the House of Representatives in the current 4th Republic, died in the wee hours of today (Wednesday 27 December 2023).
He was elected Member of the House of Representatives in 1999 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He became the Speaker a few months after the inauguration of the House following the resignation of the then Speaker, Salisu Buhari, from the same Kano State, over a certificate forgery scandal.
He was to later defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) years after the PDP lost power at the federal level in 2015.
Na’Abba had in 2022 returned to the PDP and described the APC as evil, predicting that Nigerians would punish the ruling party in the February 2023 general elections.
Born on 27 September 1958. He was the 8th Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied Political Science and graduated in 1979.
