A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the former governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose Monday (yesterday) told Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of Federal High Court sitting in Lagos how former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki paid Mr Fayose N1.2 billion in cash in order to conceal the origin of the fund and obfuscate traces.

Abubakar Madaki, a former investigative officer with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told the court that Mallam Dasuki paid the money to Mr Fayose in cash to disguise the source and eliminate all forms of traces.

Madaki, the 13th prosecution witness, told the court that the fact was uncovered during an EFCC investigation.

Madaki said EFCC discovered that the fund was from Dasuki’s office and was budgeted for the procurement of arms, as against claims that the money was a presidential campaign fund.

EFCC had dragged Mr Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, before the court on an 11-count charge of criminal breach of trust, theft and stealing of public funds.

The anti-graft agency alleged that Fayose and Abiodun Agbele, who is equally standing trial on alleged money laundering offences before another division of the court, took possession of N1.219 billion on 17 June 2014, to fund his 2014 governorship campaign in Ekiti State.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Monday, Madaki, the 13th prosecution witness, told the court that Fayose did not personally make any financial transactions relevant to the charge before the court.

The judge adjourned further hearing in the suit till  19 July 2024.
