FRANCIS Ngannou, the new boxing sensation in the heavyweight category, is requesting the current WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight championships, Oleksandr Usyk, give me a chance to have a rematch with Tyson Fury, the holder of the WBC heavyweight belt.
Cameroonian Francis Ngannou who caused a huge upset in a boxing match against Tyson Fury on 28 October, hopes that Ukrainian Usyk will agree to postpone the fight for the title of undisputed world champion and give him the opportunity to have an immediate rematch with the Briton. “Rematch is what I want to do most,” the Cameroonian said in an interview. “I have a lot of options at the moment, but I want to make the wise choice and rematch first.
“My best case scenario in boxing is to wait for Fury. If Usyk can step aside and let me fight Fury, I’ll fight Fury. After that, they can do whatever they want. Then I will fight according to MMA rules, and then I will return to boxing. Next year I plan to fight twice – the first time in February or March.”
“If Usyk doesn’t give in and my plan doesn’t work, I’ll still fight in February or March, but in MMA. After that, I will wait until October – I will have at least seven to eight months to recover from the mixed martial arts fight if something happens.”
It will be recalled that the fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou, which took place on 28 October in Riyadh, went the entire distance and ended with a split decision in favour of the current world boxing champion, who was knocked down in the third round. After this, the organisers decided to postpone the unification fight between Fury and Usyk from December to February in order to give the “Gypsy King” more time to recover and prepare.
