ISLAMIC police, known as Hisbah, in Kano State, northern Nigeria, have arrested 25 Muslims – 20 for eating in public and five for selling food – at the start of Ramadan, during which fasting from dawn to dusk is obligatory.
Hisbah, which enforces Sharia law alongside Nigeria’s secular legal system, stated that operations would continue throughout the month, emphasizing that any “disrespect” for Ramadan would not be tolerated.
The arrested individuals have been charged in a Sharia court, unlike last year when offenders were released with warnings. Hisbah also made arrests for “inappropriate haircuts,” wearing shorts above the knee, and mixing male and female passengers in tricycles.
