ADEWUNMI Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, has passed away aged 59.
Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne-Sagamu-Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, died on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, after a brief illness.
Her death was confirmed in an official statement from the Office of the House Spokesman, which expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the respected lawmaker.
A member of the House since 2019, Onanuga was known for her dedication to public service and her advocacy for women’s empowerment. She served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly and was re-elected in 2023, taking on the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly.
Born on 2 December 1965, Onanuga’s contributions to legislative development and her unwavering commitment to her constituents earned her widespread admiration. Colleagues described her as a visionary leader who embodied humility, intellect, and a passion for social progress.
The House of Representatives has extended its condolences to her family, the people of Ogun State, and her constituents, highlighting her enduring legacy of service.
Onanuga was a notable politician and entrepreneur. She had held the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the Nigerian House of Representatives since 2023.
Her journey began in Hammersmith, London, where she was born to Nigerian parents. In 2019, she successfully contested for a seat in the House of Representatives under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onanuga also served as the chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, championing key issues related to gender equality and societal welfare.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by her family in the coming days.
