THE Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has narrated how Mr Julius Chukwunta, a 37-year-old Nigerian from Enugu State, was reportedly killed by four South Africans.
According to NICASA President-General Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, the incident occurred on 7 December 2024, in Midrand Protea Estate. Chukwunta, who was from Aninri Local Government Area, was driving home when he was blocked by the suspects.
“He tried to manoeuvre past but faced resistance, prompting him to seek help at the estate’s security office,” Onyekwelu explained.
The four individuals allegedly attacked Chukwunta, inflicting severe head injuries. His female companion, who had been in the car with him, discovered him bleeding after returning from the security office.
Despite her pleas for help, neither the estate security nor the residents assisted in contacting emergency services. An hour later, Chukwunta’s partner managed to reach her father, who, with other family members, rushed him to Tembisa General Hospital. Sadly, Chukwunta succumbed to his injuries on 10 December 2024, after being placed on life support.
Onyekwelu confirmed that the case was reported to the Midrand Police Station, with file number 262/12/2024. He said the four suspects, aged 20, 24, 27, and 28, were arrested, and the case was presented in Alexandra Magistrate Court on 13 December 2024, where they were charged with murder.
“The court proceedings on 18 December 2024, saw three of the suspects granted bail of R10,000 each, while the fourth had not yet applied for bail. The case was adjourned to 3 February 2025.”
Onyekwelu expressed disappointment at the proceedings and vowed that the Nigerian community would continue to demand justice for Chukwunta and support his family.
He emphasized that the community would not rest until justice was served and the value of Nigerian lives was upheld in South Africa.
