THE mother of the incarcerated fraudster has cried out over her inability to speak with her son, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas (popularly known as HushPuppi).
On 28 July 2021, he pleaded guilty to money laundering and also identified a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Nigeria, Abba Kyari, as an accomplice in his $1.1 million scam deal.
On 8 November 2022, HushPuppi was sentenced to over 11 years (135 months) in a federal prison. He is currently imprisoned at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey and has a scheduled release date of 6 August 2029.
However, the mother of the felon has said she has not been able to access her son. According to her, “Each time I call, the prison number where Abbas is locked all I get is plenty phoneh (American English)”.
“I know my son did a lot of bad things but he didn’t kill anyone.
“I have been trying to call the prison number several times but all I get is plenty of long talks which I don’t understand since the Oyibo woman is talking through her nose.
“His father’s health is deteriorating and he may not meet him whenever they choose to let him out.
“Some of his friends have informed me Abbas is hiding some of the money somewhere, I just want him to tell me where he is hiding it so I can return it to the government for his punishment to be reduced.”
Eighteen-Eleven Media reports that the distraught mother had earlier expressed regrets the day she gave birth to him.
“The day I gave birth to him, people celebrated and adorned themselves in powder, but I never imagined he would grow up to bring shame upon our family.
“I sold bread alongside his father, who drives a taxi, to send him to secondary school.
“We even enrolled him in a programme to learn mechanics, but he chose a life of cr!me.
“No mother should have to endure the shame of a son like Abbas. He has brought nothing but disgrace. People tell me they see him on that thing you call ‘social media,’ driving fancy cars and wearing expensive clothes, yet here I am, still selling bread while his father drives a taxi on hire purchase.
“Do you consider me a proud parent? No, not at all. He can stay there as long as he wants because he means nothing to us.
“May Allah have mercy on him if he chooses to return the money he stole.
His father had also echoed the position of his wife. He said:
“Just look at our lives, every day we cry and wish we could get back to our normal lives on how it used to be.
“I drive taxis and sometimes I will hear people gossip and tell each other “ehen Na HushPuppi father be that wey I don dey tell you”
“We aren’t sad that we didn’t eat from his money but sad because of the shame he brought to us. I am an honest, hardworking man who makes a decent living but Abbas has brought me so much shame.
“I feel I have failed to raise him up responsibly.
“They should keep him there for as long as until he changes from his evil ways”.
