FOLLOWING the passage of the National Anthem bill and its subsequent signing into law, Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, who had previously served as the spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign organisation, took to social media to express his reaction to the legislative action.
He remarked that he enjoys this particular anthem since it resonated with him when he was a child and has been with him ever since.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill, which was enacted into law by the National Assembly on Tuesday.
According to Arise News, the purpose of this law is to take back Nigeria’s original national anthem, which was “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” and was played during the country’s independence in 1960.
Kenneth Okonkwo, a veteran actor in the Nigerian film industry, expressed his preference for the old National Anthem on his official X account in response to the bill. He also mentioned that the song had a strong emotional impact on him when he was a child.
He wrote;
“I have a preference for the old National Anthem – Nigeria We Hail Thee. As a child, it resonated with me.”
Kenneth Okonkwo then stated that such an anthem recognizes the diversity of Nigerians and it urges selfless service to Nigeria, adding that even the National Conference that was organised by former president, Goodluck Jonathan preferred the anthem.
The lawyer finally prayed that Nigerians would continue to live in brotherhood despite their differences.
